‘Heroes’ Review: R.I.P. Nathan Petrelli
As Heroes concluded what vaguely looked like its mid-season finale, the show alluded to the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance)— all of which I’ve gone through unknowingly as I watch the first 10 episodes of the fourth season play out. This week, though, it’s all about acceptance of the things we can’t change, what is and what should never be. Case in point: Nathan Petrelli.
Ever since Sylar killed Nathan, and Matt instilled Nathan’s memories into Sylar’s head, leading him to shape-shift into Nathan at the end of last season, Heroes fans knew that it’s only a matter of time before the show officially pulled the plug on the U.S. senator. And so, what might as well be the worst-kept secret of the TV season happened last night.
Nathan jumped off the rooftop, where he first displayed his ability to fly in the first season of Heroes, and died, leaving his brother Peter helpless and heartbroken. Now, it’s Peter’s duty to carry on and fight the good fight for both of them.
It’s not really the climatic ending I expected and it’s not really how I envisioned Nathan’s final scene to be but at least Milo Ventimiglia and Adrian Pasdar’s heartfelt emotions genuinely came across the canvas.
On the lighter side of things, “The Fifth Stage” also focused on Claire’s never-ending quest to find her place in the world only this time she ended up spending the weekend at Samuel’s carnival after realizing that it’s the closest thing to home.
As for the rest of the characters, it looked like things are going to get messier if and when Heroes returns next year. The ending left several questions involving Tracy, who was supposed to join the carnies yet was nowhere to be seen, and Hiro, who was running away with Mohinder and Ando.
